osnia and Herzegovina's railway system needs finance to rehabilitate long neglected and underfinanced lines; war damage also played a detrimental part. This project concerns the rehabilitation of Sarajevo-Podlugovi railway section (25 km) on Corridor Vc. The line has a catchment of approximately 1.5 million inhabitants, around 33 % of Bosnia and Herzegovina's total population, as well as numerous mines and industrial plants. The line serves mostly bulk freight traffic (approximately 5 million tons), out of which 60 % is international. The operating speed along the single electrified line is 30-70 km/h and the signalling system is to a great extent out of order and outdated. In addition, there are three locations with landslides that jeopardize line safety and operations.
The WBIF has allocated a €600,000 EU grant to cover the costs associated with the preparation of the feasibility study and associated designs. The latter was completed by the Infrastructure Project Facility 2 in August 2013.
The main beneficiaries from a better rail system will be the existing and future end users of the rail services along the rail line, both passengers and freight operators. It is estimated that by 2025 passenger traffic will have tripled to 360,000 passengers and freight traffic doubled to 7.6 million tons.
