In North Macedonia, the Rail Corridor X starts at Tabanovce in the north and ends at Gevgelija in the south (215 km). Although it is operational on its entire length, the signalling and communications systems are outdated, which is seriously affecting traffic flows and safety.
In 2016, the WBIF approved two grants to finance the preparation of the pre-feasibility studies for the installation and implementation of ETCS Level 1 and GSM-R, new and modern signalling and communications systems, as well as the EU technical standards on the entire Corridor in the country.
Upgrading the signalling and communications systems is crucial for aligning the railroad to the EU operational and safety standards and thus ensure interoperability. These will allow for a safer, more effective and efficient transport of goods and passengers on the railway line.
