As a prerequisite for broader efforts to upgrade Albania’s electricity transmission system, an overall national system review was made with the support of WBIF.
This review identified the priority electricity transmission investments and ranked them in order of priority. It comprised a full assessment of the transmission bottlenecks in the Albanian electricity transmission system managed by the national transmission operator, OST, with a specific reference to load growth forecasts and planned new generation effects on network topology.
The study concluded that the transmission network is in critical need of an overhaul to improve electricity supplies, especially in the south of the country, and that much-needed investments are long overdue. In total, 50 potential investments have been identified and screened using multi-criteria analysis which produced a shortlist of 20 priorities. Overall, of these 20 most pressing electricity investments, up to six have been taken through to feasibility study stage, either with additional WBIF support, or directly via the lead IFI, KfW.
