The sewerage network of Shengjin was built about 40 years ago in the town centre. The network has not been expanded in parallel with the growth of the town and tourist facilities, particularly hotels. It has been mostly in a poor and dilapidated condition, due to the age and lack of maintenance of the pipes and manholes. Renewal, upgrade and expansion of the system have been vitally important for environmental protection and sustainable development of the Shengjin. Moreover, these developments are also crucial for tourists, given that the area has been highly dependent on tourism and recreational activities as a source of income for the town.
In these circumstances, WBIF provided a technical assistance grant for the preparation of detailed designs and tender documents for the provision of wastewater collection systems (primary, secondary and tertiary sewers) within the administrative boundaries of the town of Shengjin, covering an area of approximately 20 km2.
