The sewerage system of Kavaja was inadequate for the demand made by the population of the serviced area. The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) had the capacity to meet the needs of 25,000; however, it needed to serve 100,000 people.
As for the Golemi beach area, due to the complete lack of wastewater collecting and treatment systems, most of the sewage was discharged directly to the surface waters, streams, or sea. Moreover, due to the lack of secondary and tertiary networks, there were deficiencies in the water supply and part of the population used water from wells that were not always safe.
Aiming to contribute to improving the health and environmental conditions in the coastal regions through the construction of an adequate and sustainable water supply and sewage infrastructure, WBIF has provided technical assistance for the preparation of detailed designs and tender documents for the extension of Kavaja's WWTP and the completion of a sewerage network for Golemi.
Based on the detailed design financed by the WBIF TA grant, the following investment needs have been identified:
