The Sava River, one of Europe's largest, flows from Slovenia through Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, where it joins the Danube as its largest tributary by the volume of water. It is navigable for larger vessels for approximately two-thirds of its length between Belgrade and Sisak in Croatia. As a major arterial waterway crossing international boundaries, it has major regional economic and social significance.
The purpose of this intervention was to improve the quality and effectiveness of joint flood management and forecasting capacities in the Sava River basin. It consisted of two components:
The purpose of drafting the Sava FRMP was to establish joint objectives of flood risk management in compliance with principles of long-term sustainability, identify non-structural and structural measures in areas of mutual interest, and enable a consistent and coordinated approach in managing these risks in the entire Sava River basin. FRMP has assessed flood risks and their impact in the transboundary context and proposed joint structural and non-structural measures, timing and modes of its implementation.
The Sava FFWS has been operational and jointly operated and maintained by the five Sava countries in close cooperation, coordination and support of the Secretariat of the International Sava River Basin Commission (ISRBC). The Sava FFWS has enabled riparian countries to take the right management decisions and carry out measures to prevent and mitigate severe flood and drought situations.
