Within the scope of the Serbian government programme on judiciary facilities modernisation, prisons have also been included. Considering the increase in prison population and problems with the regional or local allocation of existing district prisons compared to actual needs, it has been decided that the construction of two new prisons should be considered a priority. In this way, additional space would be created for 900 inmates by constructing new district prisons in Kragujevac and Pancevo for 400 and 500 inmates, respectively.
This WBIF technical assistance grant is a direct continuation of previously approved three grants that were focused on preparatory activities for the construction of two district prisons in Kragujevac and Pancevo.
Technical assistance activities under this grant concerned the supervision of works, contract administration of construction works, and prisons’ equipping to completion. During the construction phase, this grant ensured the uninterrupted implementation of the activities and maintained expert control over the supervision of works in line with the Serbian legislation and engineering practice in EU.
