The existing Niš - Dimitrovgrad railway line is single-track, non-electrified, and has an outdated signalling and telecommunications system. It is an integral part of the Pan European transport Corridor X (Section Xc) and the TEN-T core network. It has a total length of 97 km and is the only section of the Corridor that relies exclusively on diesel traction.
WBIF has provided continuous technical assistance to support the modernisation of the existing railway line Niš - Dimitrovgrad and the construction of the railway bypass around Niš (approx. 22 km).
This WBIF TA grant focuses on the preparation of Detailed Designs for issuing the building permits for modernisation (electrification and construction of the signalling-interlocking and telecommunication components) of the railway line, and tender documents for the selection of the contractor for execution of the works. During implementation, the scope of support was extended to include the studies and design for the subsection Crveni Krst - Pantelej where, after the construction of a bypass, passenger traffic will be organised on the line Niš -Dimitrovgrad.
