Lake Shkodra/Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, shared by Albania and Montenegro. The surrounding area offers a wide array of natural, cultural and ecotourism potentials, including the nearby popular destinations of Buna River and the coastal area, as well as the Albanian Alps/Prokletije. Nevertheless, many of these resources remain untapped and, on the contrary, the area is facing various threats, which arise from uncontrolled urban development, changes in water regime, deforestation, agricultural drainage, opened quarries, illegal hunting, and fishing.
In order to maximise the potential of the Shkodra/Skadar Lake and its surrounding areas and enhance local economic growth and prosperity, the improvement of the existing communal (water supply, sewerage and solid waste) infrastructure was deemed necessary.
This WBIF technical assistance grant has funded the preparation of relevant technical documentation for water supply and sewage systems and the improvement of waste management in villages Shiroka and Zogaj, including the Roma community district, which are part of the municipality of Shkodra.
