Hydropower exploitation of the Crna Reka is of strategic interest to North Macedonia due to the significant water storage potential and the advantage of providing a peak load of electricity. The Government is highly interested in realising this investment, as the share of renewable energy sources is growing and is expected to continue to do so in the future; reversible hydropower plants have additionally proven to be a valuable asset in balancing the regional energy system.
In order to assist with the realisation of this investment, WBIF has provided a €1 million technical assistance grant for the preparation of the Feasibility Study and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.
