In Albania, waste constitutes the highest risk of environmental pollution. With regard to waste management and recycling, Albania is facing serious challenges to reaching the targets of the EU on recycling and reducing the amount of waste being disposed of at landfills.
To address these concerns, the Albanian authorities have engaged to develop the infrastructure in the waste sector for preserving, protecting and improving the quality of the environment in six municipalities of the Fier Area, with a population of around 450,000 citizens.
In 2019, WBIF allocated a technical assistance grant for the preparation of technical documentation (Feasibility Study and ESIA) for an integrated solid waste management (ISWM) system in the Fier area in an environmentally sound, technically feasible, economically and financially viable, and socially acceptable manner in line with the EU Waste Framework Directive and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan.
