This WBIF technical assistance grant has financed the preparation of a Detailed Design, full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Tender Documents for the rehabilitation of the railway section Durres-Rrogozhine along Corridor VIII in Albania. Previously, WBIF supported the preparation of the Feasibility Study for this section which included Preliminary Design and Preliminary ESIA according to local requirements.
A 34 km long Durres-Rrogozhine railway is part of the Durres - Elbasan - Pogradec line on Corridor VIII that links the capitals of three countries Tirana (Albania) - Skopje (North Macedonia) - Sofia (Bulgaria) and the port of Durres on the Adriatic with the ports of Burgas and Varna in the Black Sea.
The rehabilitation of this line would significantly improve the connectivity of the Albanian railway system, and enable goods transit from Adriatic Corridor in Italy, through the port of Durres (Albania), to North Macedonia and Bulgaria, and further eastward.
