WBIF has provided technical assistance to the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) during the rehabilitation of selected railway sections on Corridor X in Serbia and modernisation of rolling stock. The intervention was supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The EIB investment covered the rehabilitation of three sections of Corridor X in Serbia with a total length of 93 km, which were in urgent need of improvement to remove bottlenecks in the system. The works primarily involved track overhaul and signalling renewal; some 7 km required more drastic work with the construction of a new alignment and some short single-track sections doubling to increase the capacity. The EBRD investment funding enabled up to 2,000 new freight wagons to be purchased.
These improvements in the railway connections to Croatia, Hungary and Bulgaria have contributed to connecting Serbia with the neighbouring countries and the European Union.
