The construction of an LNG terminal in Omišalj on the island of Krk has been of exceptional energy strategic significance for Croatia. The undoubted need for the transmission of natural gas creates excellent opportunities to develop the Croatian gas transmission system.
The construction of new transit gas pipelines Omišalj - Zlobin (main pipeline) and Zlobin - Rupa (international pipeline) would enable natural gas transmission from the future LNG terminal to the customers and provide options for gasification of the island of Krk. Further improvements include the reduction of CO2 emissions in the region, facilitation of economic development, and an introduction of an ecologically sound energy source in the region (replacement for firewood, coal, and fuel oil.) Being a bi-directional pipeline (from Zlobin to Rupa), this interconnector would provide a diversified and secure basis for natural gas supply not only in Croatia but also in neighbouring countries.
