Kosovo*’s railway has suffered from very limited maintenance, war damage and underinvestment. Its rail network comprises 334 km of single-track with two main lines: North to South and East to West.
The East to West Line (186 km) comprises three branches:
These sections have been in poor technical conditions whilst they have been of major importance for transporting freight and passengers. East-West lines feed both Route 10 in central Kosovo and Corridor X in south Serbia. Signalling and telecommunications have not been operational on this line.
To help with the network’s upgrade on the East to West Line, WBIF has provided technical assistance for the preparation of the Feasibility Study for a short- and medium-term package of improvements to rehabilitate (and bring back to the design speeds) the existing East-West railway line and its branches (track, structures and signalling/interlocking).
