JP Elektroprivreda BiH d.d. Sarajevo is one of three public power companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina responsible for the generation and distribution of electricity to domestic and industrial consumers. Approximately 95% of customers have been charged based on electromechanical meters. More than 25% of these electromechanical meters are around 40 years old and, hence, rather unreliable in terms of registering electricity consumption to be billed to customers. The remaining 5% of the meters are electronic, with some smart metering functionality, albeit the same reading and invoicing procedure has been applied in both cases.
In the meantime, the state has amended national regulations and conditions for the supply of electricity in a way to envisage the gradual deployment of a smart metering system on the electricity supply network, i.e. an automated meter reading system. Such provisions would encourage more rational use of electricity by customers, decrease the company’s operational costs and potentially keep the cost of electricity within affordable limits for the overall population connected to the grid.
To support these efforts, WBIF has provided a grant to cover the costs of a Feasibility Study, including the design and procurement of an intelligent metering system in the company’s service area.
